OrthoCarolina Research Internship Program (Deadline: April 1, 2013)
The deadline has passed for the 2013 Summer Internship. The application for Fall 2013 will be available on July 15th.
 
The goal of this internship is to introduce students to the basic concepts of the design, implementation, conduct, and dissemination of clinical research. These internships are available to qualified students who are interested in healthcare, healthcare administration, or clinical research careers, as well as health economics, marketing, and healthcare policy. Students will have the opportunity to participate in clinical research at a level commensurate with their experience and education. Students will work with physician investigators, clinical research staff, and research patients.

Internships will be under the direction of the department managers. Weekly meetings will allow interns to share their research plans and progress with the research team. In addition, students are encouraged to attend faculty presentations and participate in OCRI community events. At the end of the internship, students may be required to give an oral presentation about their research project(s).

Internships are non-paid, full time or part time with terms ranging from one semester to one year in length. Interns will be required to work a minimum of 20 hours per week (120 hours over 3months). For more information about the internship expectations, please click here.

Prerequisites for Applying

Applicants must have successfully completed at least one year of an undergraduate program at an accredited institution. Acceptance into the program is contingent on academic excellence. The applicant must have an overall GPA ≥ 3.2 and have completed at least two courses in the following areas of study:

• Science • Research methods • Statistics • Clinical research • Social Work
• Psychology • Public Policy • Mathematics • Education • Business • Anthropology
• Allied Health (e.g., pre-nursing, nursing, medical terminology, anatomy & physiology)

International Research Scholar Program
 
OrthoCarolina, P.A. enjoys a national/global reputation and a position as a leader in academic and clinical orthopedics through the services of Board-certified physicians with advanced fellowship training. The research interest and investigative efforts of the physicians at OrthoCarolina, in collaboration with the OrthoCarolina Research Institute, demonstrate the dedication and commitment to finding solutions to problems that face the medical community and benefit those with musculoskeletal conditions. With access to one of the largest private orthopedic practices in the United States, OC and OCRI’s priorities are centrally focused on (1) improved patient care, (2) high quality research to develop new and innovative orthopedic device and pharmaceutical products, and (3) collaborative and multidiscipline forums to further enhance state-of–the–art medical healthcare.
 
Position: Research Scholar Orthopedic Specialist
 
Objectives: 
  • To stimulate international collaborative teaching and research efforts
  • Increase mutual understanding between the United States and other countries by means of education and cultural exchanges

 Goals:

  • To mentor and work with Orthopedic Research Team to enhance the advancement of orthopedic research through peer reviewed publications
  • Strengthen collaborative research efforts with University of North Carolina-Charlotte
 
Requirements:
 
J1 Specialist Research Scholars must: 
  • Have a degree equivalent to US Medical Doctorate degree with specialty in Orthopedics
  • Maintain health insurance and medical evacuation insurance for the duration of the J1 program
  • Maintain legal status while in the U.S.
      • Maintaining insurance
      • Never engaging in employment
      • Maintaining current passport
      • Maintaining current DS-2019
  • Report any address change within 10 days to International Studies Office at UNCC
  • Perform the objectives and goals set by OrthoCarolina, OrthoCarolina Research Institute, and the University of North Carolina-Charlotte
